Warning: Protein Supplements Contain Heavy Metals

When you think of “protein supplements” and “heavy metals,” the first thing that probably comes to mind is a bodybuilder lifting weights.

Unfortunately, a recent study published in Consumer Reports has found that some popular whey protein supplements (both protein powder/liquid beverages) contain excessive levels of contaminants including cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic.

From the Consumer Reports investigation, most of the products tested including protein drinks and powders contained these contaminants in low to moderate levels.  However, three products contained excessive levels of one or two of these contaminants if consumed three times per day.

Which products had excessive levels of heavy metals based on guidelines from the U.S. Pharmacopoeia?

  1. Muscle Milk Chocolate (powder)
  2. Muscle Milk Vanilla Creme (powder)
  3. EAS Myoplex Original Dark Chocolate Shake (liquid)

From the above report, the common theme seems to be that chocolate flavored protein supplements have more contaminants than the Vanilla flavored variety.
